Savoury turmeric and tempeh bacon oat bowl recipe

A delicious umami packed oat bowl loaded with flavorful plant based goodness. The tempeh carries a smokey rich taste that is well balanced by the turmeric infused oats.


4 Cups Water
1 1/3 Cups Gluten Free Oats
1/4 Cup Nutritional Yeast
2 Tablespoons Hummus (More for topping)
2 Teaspoons Ground Turmeric
1 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Black pepper
2 Cups Greens (spinach, kale, chard) Chopped
1 Avocado Sliced
Garlic Powder to taste (1/4 Teaspoon)
Onion Powder to taste (1/4 Teaspoon)
Cumin Powder to taste (1/4 Teaspoon)

Tempeh Bacon:

2 Tablespoons Soya Sauce or Tamari
2 Teaspoons Hot Sauce
2 Teaspoons Maple Syrup
1 Teaspoon Olive Oil
1/2 Teaspoon Black Pepper
230g Tempeh Thinly sliced


In a shallow bowl, add tamari, hot sauce, maple syrup, oil, onion powder, garlic powder, cumin and pepper. Add tempeh and marinade for 5-10 minutes while you cook the oats and greens.
In a saucepan, add water and oats, bring to boil, add nutritional yeast, hummus, turmeric, salt and pepper. Simmer until oats are cooked. Divide into 4 bowls.
In a skillet add tempeh and cook until slightly charred (about 3 min each side).
Top oats with greens, tempeh bacon, hummus and avocado slices.
