Step into the Outside – Experience Nature

We tend to get so busy, focusing on building our careers, building our family lives and trying to reach a goal or some illusion that create the image of a successful life.

As cliché as this sounds, many of us have seen and learnt that true peace and happiness does not lie in the materialistic expectations of success. Health is wealth, peace is success, love is life – those are easily said, but not easily believed and lived.

With the end of this year fast approaching (can you believe how crazy that is?) and a lot of tension going around it seems to be a stressful part of the year, finding your new years resolutions have crumbled, or your projects are no where near where they should be… All this stress and worry building up inside us. Perhaps then, it’s time to look to Mother Nature for some nurturing care.

Experiencing and experimenting with the value that the outside world has to offer is a major aspect of finding peace. Walking on the grass, feeling the earth beneath your feet and connecting to the more important (yes even more important than that super important project that you know you have to complete by tomorrow) things, like finding balance, love, truth and ultimately peace.

Now, with the risk of sounding like a total tree-hugger 😉 When last have you sat beneath a big tree and felt it’s loving support? Think literally – Trees provide us with the very oxygen we use to breathe air, they provide shade from harsh sun-rays, they provide shelter and food and even serve as a habitat for so many living beings. Does it then not make sense to turn to her for peaceful energy to bring yourself back into balance.

For the techies out there, in 2004, Japan’s National Land Afforestation Promotion Organisation conducted an experiment and discovered that a forest stroll had beneficial effects on blood pressure, heart rate and the immune system. They also found that people who just looked at a forest view for 20 minutes had a 13 per cent lower concentration of the stress hormone cortisol.

Spend some time in the outside, you don’t have to go far to find a few minutes of serenity and a chance to recenter yourself. Close the laptop, switch off the phone, find a tree and sit beneath it – breathing for just a few minutes (anyone keen on being the weird employee at lunch time?).

Experiment with nature – If sitting is not an option, go for a hike or a run or even a river swim. The only person who can feel the effects is you, the only person who give it a try is you.
