Our bodies are constantly and tirelessly working to get rid of all the toxins finding their way in. Could it be time to return the favor?
Give Your Body a Break – Detox
Unless you’re reading this from the comfort of your tree house in the Amazon jungle – and if you are we’re waiting on the invite 😉 – chances are toxins and heavy metals in your environment alone can already affect your wellness. Pollution, second-hand cigarette smoke, unsafe drinking water and even exposure to chemicals in buildings new and old alike.
We also, by choice put delicious and naughty stuff into our bodies, knowing that our bodies will be working overtime to get back into balance. Our bodies are so good at giving us a hand (literally) when we need to get back into alignment, however aiding the natural detoxification process can leave you feeling great and thinking clearly.
Apart from environmental and food aspects, there’s also emotional toxins – ie STRESS ANYONE? Chronic stress damages the energy powerhouses of your body, your mitochondria (Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles (mitochondrion, singular) that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions. Chemical energy produced by the mitochondria is stored in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP)). Stress reduces your ability to metabolize and detoxify and can further increase your toxic load by increasing your cravings for high fat, high sugar foods.
Detox is commonly perceived as something you do when your gut is not so happy, you want to lose weight or you’ve over-indulged over a certain period. It can seem challenging and unpleasant with thoughts of herbal concoctions, wheat grass shots and starvation. However, it does not need to be that or for any of those purposes.
When to detox?
A detox may work best when it’s received well by the mind. Strive to flush toxins from your body, mind and soul so you may be at optimal wellness and in turn your mind will be clearer to enable you to make better decisions and live fully. Enjoy the journey, feel your body making changes.
A simple way to start a detox is with water – lots of clean drinking water, then switch to veggies and if you are getting a bit braver, head for raw foods. You can of course add some toxin flushing supplements too like activated charcoal, the famous apple cider vinegar or perhaps a gentler lemongrass essential oil. Find what works for you. Do stress reliving activities combined with your detox, do yoga, go for a run, read a book in the garden, listen to your favorite melodies – whatever helps you take a breather.
At the end of the day we believe a detox should serve you, not punish you. Leaving your mind, body and heart fully open to new challenges and exciting opportunities. A body is a necessary tool to be respected that we use to venture through this adventure of life.
Health & Peace,
